Real testing means opted-in people install your closed build and use it like users across the 14-day window. A Google Group full of unread invites does not count.
What Qualifies as Real Testing
For personal accounts created after Nov 13, 2023, you need ≥12 continuous opt-ins for 14 days. Real testing is what makes that window look legitimate under review.
Active app usage
- Open the app and exercise main flows
- Move through more than the splash screen
- Spend enough time to do something intentional
Consistent participation
- Returns across the 14 days
- Not a single launch on day 1
- Staying opted in continuously (opt-out breaks that tester’s streak)
Genuine interaction
- Using the product as intended
- Optional but valuable: feedback via Play testing feedback or your channel
Organization / D-U-N-S accounts are exempt from the personal-account 12×14 gate but still benefit from real QA. Google previously required 20 testers; the official minimum is now 12.
What Does NOT Count
Install-only activity
- Joined the list, never opted in on Play
- Opted in, never downloaded
- Downloaded, never opened
Fake or automated activity
- Bots, device farms posing as users
- Multiple self-accounts by the same person
- Scripted identical sessions
Insufficient engagement
- Two days of use then silence for twelve
- Instant uninstall
- Zero feature exploration when your apply form claims deep testing
How to Ensure Real Testing
Find quality testers
Prefer people with a reason to finish the streak (developer communities, mutual testing). Friends-and-family without reminders fail often.
Use proper tracking
Play Console shows opt-in state; pair it with open/session visibility (analytics or a platform like Closed Test Pro).
Enable engagement
Clear instructions + one daily reminder + a stable app beats guilt-trip DMs.
The Closed Test Pro Approach
Closed Test Pro’s credit model, reminders, and verified participation views push testers toward opens — not just opt-ins — which is what “real testing” means when you apply for production.
