Must Testers Open Your App Every Day? Rule vs Best Practice

Google’s written rule is continuous opt-in for 14 days with ≥12 testers — it does not literally say “open every calendar day.” In practice, near-daily opens from most testers is the safest pattern against Insufficient Testing Engagement.

    The Short Answer

Require continuous opt-in. Strongly encourage brief daily use. Perfect 100% open rates are rare; large multi-day silence across the cohort is dangerous.

This applies to personal accounts created after Nov 13, 2023. Organization / D-U-N-S accounts are exempt from that closed-test requirement. Google previously required 20 testers; the official minimum is now 12 for 14 continuous days.

    What the Data Shows

    Successful patterns

    • Most testers open on most days
    • Activity persists through week two
    • Headcount stays ≥12 opted in
    • Usage looks human and varied

    Problematic patterns

    • Heavy day 1, then near-zero
    • Multi-day gaps for many testers
    • Half the cohort dead after day 3
    • Steady decline with no replacements

    Best Practices

    Aim for daily engagement

One short session is enough for most apps. Use reminders so people do not forget.

    Track and respond

Watch opt-ins in Test and release → Testing → Closed testing. Watch opens via analytics or Closed Test Pro. Replace ghosts early.

    Be realistic

A single tester missing one day is usually fine if the overall pattern stays healthy.

    How Reminders Help

Automated daily push reminders raise open rates without you DMing twelve people every night. Closed Test Pro includes that reminder loop so the “open most days” habit sticks through day 14.
